Statewide Poll: 93% of Arizona voters believe a good transportation system is vital to future economic growth
Disapprove of Politicians in the Arizona Legislature Raiding HURF Funds
(Phoenix, AZ) A statewide poll of 600 likely voters in Arizona reveals that 93% believe it is important to have a good transportation system to manage future economic growth. The poll was conducted October 22-24 by Public Opinion Strategies.
In addition, 69% of voters across party lines disapprove of the Arizona State Legislature taking money from the Highway User Revenue Fund to pay for other programs. Of the 69% who disapprove of the actions by the state legislature, nearly 50% strongly disapprove. Another 79% believe that the state legislature should have to pay back the HURF when the economy improves.
“Taking money from the Highway User Revenue Fund is putting Arizona drivers at risk,” said AMCA President Ricardo Carlo. “With already decreased funding for transportation infrastructure over the years, raiding the HURF is not the answer. We need to make more of an investment in transportation infrastructure to ensure a safe and efficient transportation system for Arizonans.”
“It’s not surprising to see that Arizona voters understand the importance of having a good transportation system and its positive impact on the economy,” said TUCA Executive Director Ramon Gaanderse. “The state legislature’s decision to raid the HURF money multiple times has cost our state over 43,000 construction jobs. As the Arizona economy continues to suffer, we need to do all we can to create jobs, especially when it comes to construction. Since 2006, we have lost nearly 130,000 jobs in the construction industry.”
“The state legislature was wrong to raid $1.5 billion dollars from the Highway User Revenue Fund,” added AZAGC Chairman Gary Haydon. “The money dedicated to the HURF should be used for its original purpose, which is building and repairing roads, bridges and highways across the state. Raiding the HURF money is just another example of the state legislature avoiding the tough choices.”
